Flamingo Flock Fundraising: How It Works
Flamingo flock fundraising is an extremely effective event that has really taken off over the last couple of years. Here's how it works:
We'll use a church as an example. They will make an announcement to their congregation that they are holding a "Flamingo Flocking" fundraiser.Next, the shepherds of "the flock" secretly go to a member of the congregations house (either at night or when they're away at work) and plant a large flock of Pink Flamingos in the yard. Usually this is accompanied by a sign that says "You've been flamingoed!"
The "victim" must make a donation to the congretation to have the birds removed (usually between $10-20, but a free-will donation can usually net upwards of $100 at a time!) Part of the fun is that the victim gets to choose they next house that the flock lands on. The shepherds move the flamingo flock to the next house and the process begins again.
Variations On The Theme
Insurance: One common element of the fund raiser is to offer "Flamingo insurance" at the time the fundraiser is originally announced. Say for ~$25 a member can insure that the Flamingos will never visit his/her yard by paying the "insurance premium" up front. You can even make insurance certificates for people to put on their windows.
Multiple-flocks and "Flamingo Zones": A great way to increase the impact of these events is to have multiple flocks in the the field simultaneously. One way to organize this is to divide up neighborhoods or congreation lists and have a designated "Flamingo Warden" for each zone to keep track of donations and target lists.
Chart the progress of the flocks:An event like this generates a lot of excitement and really brings the community together. Communicating "flock sightings" during church services or via a regular weekly email (with pictures if possible) makes it much more real to the whole group and gets them involved in the action. Nobody will want to be left out. A good idea is to save the organization leader's house as the last "flocking site" for all the flamingo flocks -- this is a nice way to culminate the event.
Pre-order the "hit list": Announce the concept of the flamingo fundraiser. Simultaneously announce that people have the opportunity to pay to have a flock of flamingos placed in another family's yard for a day. Take orders for a month before launching the flamingo flocks. This helps to create momentum before the event.
Free-will donations: Most people have found that asking for free-will donations really increases the amount of money raised. Many people have given $100s of dollars, especially if they can see their neighbors' house flocked!
Sneaky Flamingos: Involve the parents and the kids by adding the element of surpise. Only give the youth group the flocking award if they manage to plant the flock WITHOUT being caught. As one member on a fundraising site reported "Kids really got into it year after year dressing in cammies, sneaking into back yards, using the help of a neighbor or using distraction tactics for suspecting parents. Parents really like to get involved as well waiting out in their lawns with a garden hose or some other scare tactic."
Parting Thoughts
These events turn out to be great bonding experiences. If you communicate progress and give status updates on who "got flocked", everyone seems to get really involved. Here's what one "flocker" said:
We found this fundraising idea to provide benefits far beyond what was expected. Letting the member whose yard is flocked chose the next yard included far more members than we expected. Not only members who attended worship every Sunday were flocked - we used it as an outreach tool. We flocked people who rarely attended, or who had only just started visiting! We discovered that no one was willing to be the last one to pass them on! Everyone was interested in where the flocks were (we had four flocks out). Conversation between members on Sun. morning usually started with, "I saw the flamingos in your yard...." The birds really brought the "family" together. And we even heard, 'I'm glad they came to our house. I thought we were going to be left out.'"
